This thesis
entitled “Improving listening by using multimedia to the
second year students of SMP N 5 Bireuen (A Collaborative Classroom Action
Research)”.
From the title, the researcher put the problems of this research with two questions
namely: “Can the
second year students of SMP N 5 Bireuen improve their listening ability when
the teacher uses multimedia in teaching listening and what are the advantages
of using multimedia in teaching listening to the second year students of SMP 5
Bireuen?”. Based
on the research problem, the purpose of this research is “To know if the second year
students of SMP 5 Bireuen can improve their ability in listening when the
teacher uses multimedia in the teaching and to find out the advantages of using
multimedia in teaching listening to the second year students of SMP 5 Bireuen”. To answer the
research questions, the researcher used the Classroom Action Research as
methodology of the research. This research was conducted at SMP N 5 Bireuen,
Kota Juang Sub-district, Bireuen District. The research subject was the students
of class II.1. This class consisted of 35 students. The instruments of the
research were test and observation sheet. The researcher also distributed the
questionnaires to know how long the multimedia influenced the students in
learning listening. After the researcher did all steps of action research
(cycle I and cycle 2) the researcher found out that the level of students’
achievement in improving English listening had reached the predetermined
criteria of success. Therefore, it was concluded that the application of multimedia
in teaching and learning process to the second year students of SMP N 5 Bireuen,
Kota Juang Sub-district, Bireuen Regency, could improve students’ ability in
mastering listening, and it gave some advantages to the students in learning
listening.
